Conosciutisi durante il liceo, appena terminate le scuole superiori il duo entra sotto la protezione dell'etichetta LaFace e registrano il singolo mwdqPlayer's Ball, che diventa disco d'oro.

L'album di debutto è mwdwSouthernplayalisticadillacmuzik, arrivando al disco di platino. Nel mwea1995 durante i Source Awards, gli OutKast vincono il premio mweqNew Rap Group Of The Year. Nell'agosto del mweg1996 esce mwewATLiens altro disco di platino per il singolo mwfaElevators (Me & You). Nel mwfq1998 il duo pubblica mwfgAquemini. Gli Outkast vivono una causa giudiziaria per un loro brano, mwfwRosa Parks, ma il processo termina con l'assoluzione del duo nel mwga1999.

Dre modifica il suo nome in Andre 3000 e con Big Boi realizza mwggStankonia nel mwgw2000, album che diventa triplo disco di platino, con singoli quali mwhaMs. Jackson, mwhqB.O.B (acronimo di mwhwBombs Over Baghdad), mwiaSo Fresh So Clean e mwiqHumble Mumble con mwigErykah Badu. Ai World Music Awards il gruppo vince il mwiwWorld's best group, il mwjaBest pop group ed il mwjqBest rap/hip-hop artist.

In seguito decidono di investire sull'abbigliamento aprendo un'omonima marca di vestiario. Tornano alla musica con il greatest hits mwjwBig Boy And Dre Present...Outkast nel dicembre del mwka2001. Dopo due anni, nel mwkq2003 esce mwkgSpeakerBoxxx/The Love Below, doppio album la cui particolarità sta nel fatto che mwkwSpeakerboxxx è affidato a Big Boi, mwlaThe Love Below ad Andre 3000.

Ai mwlgBillboard Awards del 2004 gli OutKast vincono come mwlwBest Album, mwmaRap Album, mwmqBest Album Artist e mwmgBest Duo/Group, ai mwmwGrammy Award come mwnaBest Urban/Alternative Performance per il brano mwnqmwngHey Ya! e mwnwBest Rap Album e mwoaAlbum of The Year. Dopo la pubblicazione dell'album mwoqmwogIdlewild il duo si scioglie per sperimentare progetti solisti.
